I Have A Box

“Character is higher than intellect.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

A few years ago, this video became viral on YouTube:

(Click here if you can’t view it above)

It prompted a lot of parodies and responses like this one (WARNING- not PG, or even PG-13 material). Years have gone by and I had long forgotten these videos. Until today when I received a box…

I knew that I was going to be receiving a belated birthday present from my aunts, uncles, and cousins in Maryland… but I was surprised by how big it was!

Of course I did what any normal person would do and I opened it immediately.

Woah… that’s a lot of gifts! They were numbered 1-21 (clever ;) ) and I was supposed to open them numerically.

I opened and opened the presents one by one and sent out a stream of tweets.

Seriously… if you never read my blog or never met me before in your life, you would know me PERFECTLY after seeing everything I received.

I am not posting these pictures to “showoff” or “brag”… I actually have a point and meaning behind this. Stick with me. ;)

I was amazed by all of the THOUGHT that went into this package. Everything they put into the package describes me perfectly…

The baseball T-shirt to show off my pride for one of my favorite baseball teams…

Go Orioles!

The money and iTunes gift cards for the poor, but music obsessed, college student that I am…

Colorful socks and Silly Bandz for the inner child in me…

The Trader Joe’s goodies to make my foodie heart jump for joy…

No the granola did not come stapled like that… I had a handful out of the bag as soon as I unwrapped the present. ;)

The girlie items for when I decide to stop being such a tomboy…

And of course, the “good” stuff, for the inner party girl that is somewhere very very very deep inside of me…

Gotta have the Baileys… hey I’m Irish after all! ;) Actually I’ve never had Baileys before…

Love the little drink recipe beneath the wine glass…

I was seriously so amazed by how much care and thought they put into my package. I am admittedly a very difficult person to read… it can be difficult to see what I am truly interested in and what I am thinking. However, my family hit this out of the ballpark… so to them, I say thank you times a million. This really was the PERFECT birthday surprise!

So what was my point in posting these pictures?

My point is that every single one of us has a “box” and we fill that “box” with different traits and attributes about ourselves. These attributes can be honesty, high morals, humility, passionate, affectionate, caring, etc. What we fill our boxes with varies from person to person- no box is the same, just as no two people are the same. The things we put in our box are what define ourselves and show people who we truly are. Some of these traits and attributes may be unwrapped, but others may be more hidden, or “wrapped” like presents, just waiting to be unwrapped. Our box is sort of like our dream jar- it is a part of us.

If I had to put a few things in my box, I would put in traits like thoughtful, determined, focused, hard-working, and sincere… along with a few others that are “under wraps.”

So one question remains- what would you fill your box with?

  1. Awesome job to your familia for a stellar birthday gift! If I had to fill a box of me, I would fill it with humor, a hard work ethic, consciousness, and a strong desire to help children and the vulnerable population as a whole.

Happy belated birthday, by the way! I have been reading a while and have commented a few times, but I’m uncertain as to whether or not I ever sent happy birthday vibes your way. I hope you enjoyed it!

  2. Your aunts and uncles are very generous! We stop getting brithday presents when we turn 18 – lame, right? :)

    • Haha! I was so surprised by everything! (Hey- I stopped getting presents from my dad’s side of the family when I was 13!)

  3. wow you are so lucky to have so many people care about you! none of my extended family recognizes my birthday, HA!
Oh and I have Tangled, one of my new faves!

We’re so happy you enjoyed the presents! It was a lot of fun to put together! We enjoyed reading your blog!

(Caitlin – I liked the end bit about our own personal box. Might steal that analogy :P with credit of course)

    Love, us.

  5. I’m impress with whoever wrapped all that stuff. Looks so colorful. I spy Tangled, I freakin’ love that movie. Looks like a fun birthday.

    • My aunt wrapped it! She could seriously be a professional gift wrapper. It looks pretty but some of the packages were tricky to unwrap! ;)
