Time To Get Dirrty!!!

No, not that DIRRTY, this dirty…

One of my goals for 2012 was to do a mud-run and I finally decided to take on the challenge! Bring on the North Florida Superhero Scramble!
I don’t know where my huge desire to do a mud-run comes from. While I love being outside and not afraid to get a little dirty, I’m not the biggest fan of mud. However, races like this are more of a novelty than anything. Obviously it will be a fun challenge and a way to mix things up a little. This is an experience that I need to check off my race bucket list!
There have been numerous mud-runs in the area this Spring but they have never fit into my schedule. I was either at another race, tapering, or recovering from a race. Also, mud-runs have the tendency to be super expensive and the race fees are a little out of my budget. Yes, I know that you are paying for the experience, but some of the fees for the races can be insane!
I found this race about two months ago and penciled it into my schedule, but was not 100% sold on it yet. I kept my eye out for a deal or discount and came across one Sunday evening. Groupon was selling a deal which included the race registration at less than half the cost than on the race website! Sign me up!!!
The race is on July 28th in Waldo, FL which is a little over an hour from Jacksonville. Admittedly it falls during a tricky time in my race schedule but I knew that this race was probably my last opportunity to tackle a mud-race this year. Doing this race means that I will have three consecutive weekends of racing (a sprint triathlon, mud-run, and then my big Olympic triathlon) but we will see what happens. This mud-run will obviously be for fun and not for time!
The course map does not reveal very many of the obstacles, but there are Marines that you have to battle through at the finish, so that is not too shabby!
My summer racing schedule is filling up and I am excited! Thanks to your votes, I will be heading up to North Carolina next weekend to run my sixth half-marathon. Then two weeks later I will be competing in my second sprint triathlon (which I have decided to do for a PR now, more about that decision later).
This summer is looking to be filled with a lot of competition and a little mud!
Now the question remains…should I get in the spirit and dress up as a superhero? We’ll have to see!
Have you ever done a mud-run before? Any tips and/ or race recaps you would like to share?
My name is Katy and I am a 23-year-old living, running, and cycling in and around the Washington, DC metro area. This blog chronicles my life, inner musings, and fitness adventures as I try to navigate this crazy thing called life!

Congrats on your decision, you won’t regret it. I won I wildcard for Fisherman’s Friend Strongmanrun at Nürburgring and it was so much fun. Tough and freezing cold that day but a great experience. Sure you should dress up especially if you’re gonna run for the fun of it!
I haven’t done a mud run but I’d love to. They actually have a super deal right now on the Prison Break Mud Run in Tampa next month, would love to do it with hubby who has done the Warrior Dash. I am not really a fan of getting dirty, but I would love to try it once!
Yes, I’ve done several!!
Wear clothes you are ok with throwing out. Sometimes it’s really difficult to get stuff clean.
Bring a garbage bag to put your wet clothes in when you’re done as well as a change of clothes. Bring extra towels too.
Have a plan for where you’re going to keep your key while you run.
Don’t wear baggy clothes. Wear comfortable tennis shoes.
I did the Rugged Maniac in Feb at the same location as your event. http://bit.ly/zjSKn7
And I’ve done the MS Mud Run (Now called Muck Ruckus) three times. Here’s a link to my latest recap which has links to the others at the top. http://bit.ly/HU9Olw
Email or tweet me if you have any questions!! Good luck! Can’t wait to read your recap!
You’ll have a blast!! Mud runs are lots of fun! I’ve done two
I definitely think you should dress up – but I wouldn’t spend a bunch of $ on a costume (maybe try a thrift store?). It will get dirty and there is a chance some stuff won’t some out or it’ll get ripped.
Great decision to make it about fun not time!
Here are recaps from the two that I did this year:
