Summer Training 2012: Week 9

It’s official, I have Olympic Fever! While I have been following the trials for the different sports over the weeks, this weekend was filled with swimming, track and field, and gymnastics trials and I love it! I am so excited for London in a few weeks!

While I may never be an Olympic athlete, I personally had a pretty good training week. Here is how it turned out…

June 25- July 1, 2012:

Monday: Spin Class+ Strength Training+ Core/ Stretching

I definitely was not a fan of this spin class. Like the spin class I took on Sunday, we spent a lot of time out of the saddle. I have noticed that the female teachers tend to do a lot more standing climb work verses the male teachers. I know it is a matter of preference, but I definitely like doing saddle work more, as I feel it applies more to my cycling goals/ training. After the spin class, I did an arms and back strength training workout followed by core work and stretching.

Tuesday: Run 5 miles (Treadmill)+ Elliptical .39 miles (Warm-Up)

Due to Tropical Storm Debby and all the flooding around town, I was forced to take my run indoors. This run was actually not too bad as I distracted myself by watching a TV show on my phone.

Wednesday: Swim 1150m+ Strength Training+ Core/ Stretching

My first real swim workout in over two weeks. It was short, but I did a lot of drill work so I felt good about it. After swimming, I did an arms workout followed by core work and stretching.

Thursday: BRICK: Bike 15.58 miles+ Run 3.01 miles

My first brick workout since May but more importantly, my first SUCCESSFUL brick workout in over three months. My legs were a bit lethargic during the ride, but I did not have any muscle cramping, stomach issues, or any other problems that have plagued me during my previous brick workouts. I would still like to get my running speed up, but I’ll take what I can get.

Friday: REST

Saturday: Swim 1550m+ Strength Training+ Core/ Stretching

For some reason the water in the pool was FREEZING and it took me awhile to get warmed up and in a groove. I wanted to swim longer, but was on a little time crunch. After swimming, I did the same strength training workout from Monday (but increased my weights) followed by a core workout and stretching.

Sunday: Run 7 miles (Treadmill)+ Elliptical .37 (Warm-Up)

A new personal distance record on the treadmill! Usually I would complain about having to run anything over three miles on the treadmill, but with the heat index over 100 degrees, I soaked up the AC in the gym. I always run a little slower on the treadmill than I do outside, but I still felt solid during this run. I also watched the Tour de France, which served as great motivation.

  • Running Mileage= 15.01
  • Bike/ Spin Mileage= 15.58+ Spin Class
  • Swim Distance= 2700m
  • Total Distance= 32.27+ Spin Class

Overall, a solid week. This is probably the strongest week I have had in awhile. I still want to increase my intensity and distances across the board, but this week is a good starting point. I did not get in a third swim workout like I had hoped, but my gym pool is closed until the 8th, so I am in a little bit of a bind. I am currently looking at the other gym locations in town to swim at this week. Otherwise, I may have to swim in my small apartment pool.

Last Week’s Goals:

  • Get back into training mindset (CHECK!)
  • Reveal new race plan (CHECK!)
  • Be flexible- I have more tropical storm weather heading my way. Boo! (CHECK!)
  • Increase running mileage (Just barely… but CHECK!)

Goals For Next Week:

  • Figure out how to get in swim workouts (my gym pool is closed for the week due to repairs)
  • Increase running mileage
  • Get in another solid brick workout
  • Do something fun this week

Previous Weeks:

Have a great week!
